Biography

Richard Bessel is Emeritus Professor of Twentieth-Century History at the University of York, where he has taught German social, political and military history, with particular attention to the aftermath of the First World War, the Weimar Republic, Nazi Germany, and the transitions of 1945. He is the author of Germany after the First World War (Oxford, 1993) and Germany 1945: From War to Peace (HarperCollins, 2009), among other books. He has been a long-standing co-editor of German History, the journal of the German History Society, carrying the title through its Edward Arnold/Hodder Arnold years and its later transfer to Oxford University Press.
