Biography
Norbert Schmitt is Emeritus Professor of Applied Linguistics at the University of Nottingham. After teaching EFL in Japan he completed a Nottingham doctorate on vocabulary knowledge under Michael McCarthy, then spent his career there researching second-language vocabulary acquisition, formulaic language, and language testing. He has published numerous books and articles that shaped how teachers and testers conceptualise lexical breadth and depth. His Arnold Introduction to Applied Linguistics distils that experience for newcomers to the discipline.
