Biography
Graham Hughes is a British rheumatologist who in 1983 described the antiphospholipid syndrome — now also called Hughes syndrome — and who established the first specialised lupus clinic in Europe. He served for many years at the Hammersmith Hospital's Lupus Research Unit and then led the Louise Coote Lupus Unit at St Thomas' Hospital, London; he later founded the London Lupus Centre in private practice. He was the founding Editor of Lupus, launched by Edward Arnold in 1991, and carried it through the Hodder Arnold years and into SAGE publication from 2006. He is a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians, was appointed MBE in the 2025 Birthday Honours for services to lupus and Hughes syndrome patients, and has authored more than ten books on lupus and related autoimmune disease.
