Biography
Neil Douglas was among the UK clinicians who turned obstructive sleep apnoea from a niche diagnosis into an evidence-based specialty. After training in respiratory medicine he founded the Scottish National Sleep Laboratory, co-founded the British Sleep Society, and led randomised and physiological studies that underpinned CPAP therapy. Knighted in 2009 for services to medicine, he served as president of the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh and chaired the Academy of Medical Royal Colleges. Arnold / Hodder Arnold published his Clinicians' Guide to Sleep Medicine as a ward-side distillation of that research programme.
